Abstract

The rapid expansion of data centres has raised critical concerns regarding their environmental impact, prompting the need for sustainable infrastructure investments. This study provides a comprehensive comparative analysis of global trends in sustainable data centre infrastructure, with a focus on identifying key components, challenges, regulatory frameworks, and emerging trends. The study employed an extensive literature review, drawing on reputable academic sources, industry reports and case studies to ensure a robust and evidence-based analysis. The findings reveal that the data centre industry is undergoing a transformative shift towards sustainability, driven by a combination of regulatory pressure, stakeholder expectations, and technological advancements. Energy efficiency, renewable energy adoption, water conservation, carbon management and circular economy practices were identified as fundamental components of sustainable data centres. However, the study also highlights several challenges, including high energy consumption, water usage, carbon emissions, regulatory compliance and financial barriers. A detailed exploration of global regulatory frameworks further emphasizes the role of policy in promoting sustainability. Additionally, the study examines practical case studies that demonstrate successful sustainable practices in data centres, providing valuable insights for industry stakeholders. The study concludes that achieving sustainable data centre infrastructure requires a holistic approach that combines technological innovation, regulatory compliance, stakeholder engagement and continuous improvement. It recommends that data centre operators invest in energy-efficient technologies, explore renewable energy options, adopt circular economy practices, and enhance transparency through sustainability reporting. Policymakers are encouraged to strengthen regulatory frameworks to promote sustainability, while stakeholders should support sustainable practices through informed decision-making.
